Damsels Hem Along

Is it a maxi skirt? Is it a mini skirt? No, damsels—it's my latest obsession. It's a midi skirt.

Meet the drop hem. The dip hem. The hi low hem. At first, I too looked at this gorgeous evolution of fashion as some weird hybrid to be mocked. I deemed it a mullet for clothes, and walked on. But like colored pants and sheer cut-outs before it, the drop hem wiggled it's way into the depths of my mind. It's a backwards-awesome-mullet of fashion, all business in the back and party in the front. It's flattering. It looks easy breezy. You can dress it up with a blazer at the office, or just throw on a casual tee for your weekend strolls at the farmers market because yeah, all of a sudden you're the kind of person who strolls at farmers markets.

So now I say ALL OF THE DROP HEMS!

Nah, but seriously y'all, this is pretty cute.

Happy New Trends, Damsels!

A very happy 2012 to you, Damsels! And with the holiday weight gain, well-intentioned resolutions and long-awaited return of 30 Rock, the new year also brings us tons of propaganda concerning our future wardrobes.

Plan on seeing a lot of polka dots in 2012. Feathers and espadrille shoes are back in style (hopefully not together). Neon colors and loud patterns will meet with tight, light-colored skinnies as Spring (which is apparently already upon us) pits pastels vs. brights.

Basically, plan on being a fashion-schizophrenic.

But possibly the most hilarious trend to "expect" over the next 12 months is what Top Shop refers to as "Surf Luxe." And yes, their vision is as/if not more ridiculous than the name itself:

Maybe the world will end this December -- and I for one plan to be dressed EXACTLY LIKE THIS.

Fabulous Damsels Don Cossacks

When a friend of ours went to Russia to study abroad, amidst all the revelry concerning the prodigious amounts of vodka and her glaring lack of language skills, we joked she would come back bedecked in furry coats and hats. And maybe married to a billionaire.

And though we were right about the vodka, she did not come back with a furry cossack for me to try on and laugh at, but secretly admire and envy.

That's why I'm extremely pleased with Top Shop. They understand the importance of a Lisa Vanderpump-esque chapeau to don during these winter months, no matter how ridiculous it may seem.

Seriously, what's not to love?

Top Shop is currently sporting a wide variety in colors to choose from, but I'm particularly taken with this honey-colored cap. It's furry, warm-looking and though freakishly-similar to the color of my dogs, it's also completely faux and animal-friendly.

But they also have a white version à-la-Lisa. Oh, Top Shop. How's a girl to choose?

A City on a Damsel?

Lost cities like Atlantis and El Dorado always fascinated me as a child. The romantic notion that an entire culture had been lost and could be rediscovered was exciting, and a part of me still fantasizes that someday I'll stumble into some National Treasure-esque adventure that will snowball into me being chased by bad guys/finding important historical treasures/obvi saving the world. This city, however, is one I wish I had never uncovered:

My dear damsels, this shift maxi dress by Unique** costs $270 and features a "gold city print" smack dab over your lady parts.

And in case you thought this was some freak accident that somehow slipped past the designer and was pushed through by a spiteful intern hell-bent on making women look like frumpy pillow cases while drawing attention to our uteri with images of metropolitan infrastructure, it also comes in a shorter version:

And they say lightening never strikes twice. I think I speak for both myself and my oh-so-fashionable uterus when I vote we find each and every one of these dresses...and burn them all.
